BIOGRAPHY
Gary Long is Principal Percussionist of the San Bernardino Symphony and Principal Timpanist of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. He has freelanced in Southern California orchestras such as The Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera, Pacific Symphony, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, and Symphony in the Glen.
Gary can also be heard in the orchestra for Dance at the music center where he has been Timpanist for American Ballet Theatre, The Bolshoi Ballet, and The San Francisco Ballet. Other credits include timpanist for the Mainly Mozart festival in San Diego and touring for Andre Boccelli.
Gary has appeared as soloist with the Long Beach Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Ballet performing the Phillip Glass “Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanist.” He is frequently heard in chamber music concerts throughout San Bernardino, Los Angeles, and Orange counties. In 1987 and 1988 Mr. Long was Principal Timpanist of the Nova Filarmonia Portuguesa, a chamber orchestra based in Lisbon, Portugal.
Gary has been on the teaching staffs of several universities including Cal State San Bernardino, La Sierra University, California Baptist University, and College of the Desert, and has presented master classes and guest lectures at several universities in southern California. Gary is presently an assistant teacher of elementary orchestra and Band for the Redlands Unified School District.
He received his musical training at the Juilliard School in New York City where he studied with Roland Kohloff and Buster Bailey, of the New York Philharmonic, receiving his Master of Music degree. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Oregon and was a student of Charles Dowd.
